Art's breakdown: why the tape changed his Volkanovski vs Evloev pick
Art went into the tape leaning the other way:
“Coming into the tape, I thought I was set on taking Alexander Volkanovski” (0:21)
His starting point was Volkanovski's takedown defense in the first Islam Makhachev fight, which he thought held up well. Then he studied Evloev, and he says Evloev's tape “was actually pretty impressive” (0:58). His main point is that Evloev is not a one-dimensional wrestler:
- Dan Ige: Art has Evloev out-striking Ige and dominating the grappling, landing nine takedowns (1:18).
- Diego Lopes: Evloev out-struck Lopes and got on top with ground and pound. Art says he looked better almost everywhere (1:50).
- Arnold Allen: Art calls this the closest comparison to a Volkanovski fight: a mobile striker with outside low kicks and good defensive wrestling. Evloev still out-struck and out-grappled him and kept position through Allen's scrambles (2:07).
- Aljamain Sterling: Art has Evloev out-scrambling Sterling and stronger in the clinch (3:08).
- Lerone Murphy: Evloev barely wrestled until late in the fight and still stood with a legit striker, which Art reads as proof his striking holds up (3:37).
Volkanovski vs Evloev fight analysis: kicks against kick catches
- Volkanovski's game: Art describes Volkanovski working from way outside in kicking range, picking his moments to jump in with the 1-2, and switch-stepping to land the left hand from southpaw (4:49). On UFCStats, 25% of Volkanovski's landed significant strikes are leg strikes (Art cites 26% on stream, 4:39).
- The problem: “when you outside kick Evloev, he reaches down and catches that kick and converts it into a takedown” (5:30). Art says he saw it against Lopes and Allen.
- What that does to Volkanovski: “the threat of the takedown will limit a lot of the output from Volkanovski” (6:00).
- On the mat: Art thinks it “probably takes Volkanovski like two to three minutes to work back up to his feet” (6:40), eating damage on the get-ups.
- On the feet: He calls it “maybe 50-50 on the feet” and maybe even a slight edge to Evloev, who has the more varied arsenal (7:08).
- On the ground: “this is all Evloev in terms of minute winning” (7:22).
- Submissions: He doesn't expect one: “Volkanovski's sub defense looks pretty good” (7:30).
- Volkanovski's path: Art sees Volkanovski point fighting with kicks from the outside, and says “maybe he catches him with the right hand” coming in (7:56). The plan, in Art's words, is to “stick and move” and not get caught in the pocket (8:40).

“I'm gonna pick Evloev to win. I think he's gonna win a decision” (8:54)
Art notes that “every single fight for Evloev has gone to decision” (8:09), so he expects the scorecards, but he also sees a possibility that Evloev finds a finish over five rounds. He calls the fight pretty close and says Evloev has more upside. Over five rounds, he adds, “Movsar doesn't slow down” (10:46).

- Fair line: Art's own numbers make Evloev about -122 (11:34). He later describes it as somewhere between 55% and 60% Evloev (14:52).
- Where the value is: “the only thing playable is Movsar Moneyline” and “It's only like a slight little edge there” (12:34, 12:43).
